Wherever possible, you will want to have some knockout expressions available in order to exercise effective persuasion, management and influence. This can make all the difference between being a talented and creative colleague or consultant who helps make things happen and the person with comparable skills but who somehow seems to remain on the edges of the main action.<\/p>\n<p>As German is generally a more direct language than English, there is the risk that your suggestions or presentation of options expressed in direct translation could sound more like a requirement or an order than you intend them to be. There is also a need to be correspondingly more aware of the non-verbal language taking place in such interactions.<\/p>\n<h2>Asking for suggestions<\/h2>\n<p>The actual words \u2018suggest\u2019 and \u2018suggestion\u2019 are well worth using when you want to suggest something, even though related phrases exist that do not use either of those words. \u2018A suggestion\u2019 from you can somehow seem more weighty than \u2018an idea\u2019, especially if it is the result of your considered thinking. Embedded in the idea of asking others for suggestions is that you genuinely welcome them and are not making a formalised request. Employees can become quickly discerning at noticing the difference between a colleague who really does want to listen to them and someone who does not.<\/p>\n<p>What do you suggest?<br \/>\nWhat do you suggest we do?<br \/>\nDo you have any suggestions?<br \/>\nHave you got any ideas for this?<br \/>\nDo you have any ideas for\/about this?<br \/>\nCan you think of anything for this? &lt;informal&gt;<\/p>\n<h2>Making suggestions<\/h2>\n<p>English can make extensive use of the pronoun \u2018we\u2019, even though the people covered by the pronoun at any given moment can sound unclear at times. This use of \u2018we\u2019 sounds inclusive and relational (implying \u201cwe\u2019re in this together\u201d), whereas \u2018you\u2019 can sound somewhat colder and more remote. However, \u2018we\u2019 should not be used when the speaker is clearly not identified with the suggested action, as that could sound insincere.<\/p>\n<p>I suggest (that we)\u2026<br \/>\nI\u2019d like to suggest\u2026<br \/>\nI think we should\u2026<br \/>\nPerhaps you\/we could\u2026<br \/>\nYou\/We could\u2026<br \/>\nIf I might make a suggestion, you\/we could\u2026<br \/>\nWe haven\u2019t tried&#8230; (e.g. doing a survey of our recent customers.)<\/p>\n<p>Another notable feature of English is its use of questions to cover functions other than the usual one of seeking information.<\/p>\n<p>Have you considered\u2026?<br \/>\nHave you thought of\u2026? While the expression \u2018I\u2019m afraid\u2019 may translate badly into other languages, it is a very useful expression in English meaning fairly unapologetically that \u201cI realise this is not the answer you\u2019re hoping for\u201d. The use of \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d is, in contrast, the best way of apologising.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t know what to suggest.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t have any suggestions (I\u2019m afraid).<br \/>\nI\u2019m sorry I can\u2019t think of any.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to remain aware of the coding that exists within the English language. A speaker might sound more positive in response to a suggestion than they actually are. The intention of the coding is well-meant, as it is used to avoid giving too blunt a response that could possibly give offence. Coding can be a valuable way to handle difficult questions and objections.<\/p>\n<p>Some ambiguous responses are given here. You may need to check your own understanding at some later point about what the speaker meant more precisely. At the time of use, though, you need to be observant about the context, the tone of voice and the facial expression of the speaker as well as any words, non-verbal reactions or silence that follow immediately afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly a possibility.<br \/>\nI\/We\u2019d need time to think about that.<br \/>\nWe could think about that.<br \/>\nPerhaps. [a short reply that implies probably not]\n<h2>Agreeing to an idea or suggestion<\/h2>\n<p>I think that is a good suggestion.<br \/>\nThank you for that.<br \/>\nI think that would work very well.<br \/>\nThank you for your suggestion.<\/p>\n<h2>Disagreeing with a suggestion or expressing hesitation<\/h2>\n<p>If this is done well, listeners can rapidly sense the disagreement in the tone of voice used.<\/p>\n<p>We could do, but\u2026<br \/>\nI don\u2019t think that would work.<br \/>\nI have some doubts about\u2026 (e.g. the Turin project.)<br \/>\nThat\u2019s a good idea, but\u2026<br \/>\nI\u2019m not sure about\u2026<br \/>\nI don\u2019t think that\u2019s possible.<br \/>\nI\u2019m not sure how to respond to that.<\/p>\n<h2>Making an alternative suggestion<\/h2>\n<p>An alternative suggestion means another one. A positive way to respond to a suggestion you don\u2019t approve of is to make a counter-suggestion of your own.<\/p>\n<p>Couldn\u2019t we do Y instead?<br \/>\nWouldn\u2019t it be better if we\u2026?<br \/>\nMight I suggest that you do Z instead? (e.g. use a modified model for your projections?)<br \/>\nI would rather we\u2026 (e.g. postponed this decision until the next meeting.)<br \/>\nI would prefer that we\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Asking about options<\/h2>\n<p>When you are talking about options, it can seem tidier to use the word \u2018alternatives\u2019 when there are only two choices and \u2018options\u2019 when there are three or more. However, please note that some users of English may use the word \u2018alternatives\u2019 to refer to any number of possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>What do you see as our options?<br \/>\nWhat are our options?<br \/>\nDo you have some options for us?<br \/>\nWhat kind of choice do we have? [that is, I don\u2019t think we have much choice]\nDo we have any choice? [a difficult situation where there are two equally unpleasant courses of action that those in charge are doing their best to steer professionally in between]\n<h2>Operating successfully and comprehensibly in international settings<\/h2>\n<p>Altogether, it becomes apparent that the range and successful use of this kind of language is dependent on a considerable focus on listening and observing carefully as well as on one\u2019s own choice of words, tone of voice and body language.
