AI in German companies: AWS study shows potential and obstacles

Contents

So far, AI is relatively uncommon in German companies. Just under a third of German companies have integrated AI into their processes. Worldwide, the figure is 44% of all companies. Germany is therefore lagging a little behind the average. A study by AWS and Strand Partners shows the potential but also the hurdles for the integration of AI in German companies.

Increase in AI in German companies

In 2023, 36% of German companies will be using artificial intelligence. This is an increase of 29% compared to 2022. These are the results of the study "Unlocking Europe's AI Potential in the Digital Decade", which was conducted by Strand Partners on behalf of AWS.

According to this study, a constant increase in the use of AI in German companies would generate gross value added of 116 billion euros by 2023. Overall, this would have a positive effect of 668 billion euros on the German economy as a whole by 2030.

The incentives for the increased use of AI in German companies are obvious: companies that have already integrated AI report positive effects. Among other things:

    - An increase in the efficiency of business processes in 92% of companies with AI.

    - Higher sales in 68% of companies that use AI.

However, 57% of companies in Germany lack the digital skills to integrate artificial intelligence into their processes in a meaningful way.

This is where the problems arise which, according to the Strand Partners study, could be responsible for German companies not jumping on the "AI bandwagon" more quickly.

Hurdles to the integration of AI in German companies

The study highlights three key obstacles that Germany must overcome in order for companies to improve their business processes and increase sales with artificial intelligence:

    1. companies must create a climate that promotes innovation.

    2. the digital skills shortage must be tackled.

    3. access to new technologies must be made as easy as possible for companies.

Most companies in Germany are interested in using AI, but the hurdles are preventing them from doing so. The unclear legal situation also plays a part in the skepticism that is slowing companies down when it comes to integrating AI.

However, the biggest hurdle is the shortage of skilled workers. Only 15% of companies have qualified staff in the digital field. 57% of companies even state that there is a lack of basic digital skills and that even sending emails can still be a challenge. This puts Germany at the bottom of the European league table when it comes to digital skills in companies.

This is why many German companies rely on digital specialists from abroad. An improvement in the situation is hardly in sight, as only 11% of German companies participate in further training programs for digital training.
