European Sovereign Cloud from AWS for European customers

Contents
AWS is planning its own independent cloud for European customers. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud offers more choice and flexibility, enabling European customers to better meet the requirements within the European Union (EU). All metadata created with the European Sovereign Cloud remains in the EU. Control and support is provided exclusively by AWS employees based in Europe. This is intended to better ensure compliance with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
AWS European Sovereign Cloud for the public sector and regulated industries
The independent AWS European Sovereign Cloud is intended for customers from the public sector and so-called regulated industries, among others, who operate under strict regulations and prohibitions. The new cloud for Europe is designed to help meet all legal requirements for data processing.
Authorities and companies from various countries have already confirmed that they welcome the introduction of a cloud developed exclusively for the European market. These include the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the Finnish Ministry of Finance, the Romanian Competence Center for Cybersecurity and the Czech National Agency for Cyber and Information Security (NÚKIB).
AWS assures that no customer data will be accessed without consent. All rights and controls remain within the borders of the EU. This means that no access is possible in other countries, such as the USA, where other data protection laws exist, some of which are contrary to the European data protection regulations.
Vice President of Sovereign Cloud at AWS Max Peterson said: "The AWS European Sovereign Cloud underscores our commitment to providing our customers with the most advanced sovereignty, privacy and security controls available in the cloud."
The idea for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud did not come about by chance: "For more than a decade, we have been working with governments and regulators across Europe to understand and meet the changing requirements for cyber security, data privacy, the location of data processing - and now digital sovereignty."
Availability of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud should be in no way inferior to the well-known AWS Cloud in terms of scope. AWS Outposts and AWS Dedicated Local Zones are also designed to meet particularly strict requirements. These applications make it possible to add new locations to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
There are currently eight AWS regions in Europe:
- Frankfurt
- Ireland
- London
- Milan
- Paris
- Spain
- Stockholm
- Zurich
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be available in all European regions. It is not yet known when the launch will take place. However, as there is already great interest in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud among public authorities and companies, AWS will probably not take too long with the release.
