How companies are preparing for the future with AI

The rapid development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents companies with new challenges and opportunities. The latest study by the Deloitte AI Institute entitled "The State of Generative AI in the Enterprise", for which 1982 managers from companies worldwide were surveyed, shows how companies are using this technology and what obstacles they need to overcome.
A key focus of the report is on value creation through generative AI. It shows that a significant number of companies are already seeing substantial benefits from the use of these technologies, although the degree of success varies greatly between organizations. Organizations with a high level of expertise in Generative AI, i.e. those that have already gained in-depth experience, report more aggressive scaling and a higher level of benefits achieved compared to less experienced companies. More experienced organizations use Generative AI not only to increase efficiency, but also to drive innovation and growth. This in turn improves their strategic positioning.
Cautious approach
However, scaling generative AI is one of the biggest challenges. Many companies struggle with technical and organizational obstacles, ranging from data security concerns to a lack of explainability of AI results. A particular focus is on employees' lack of familiarity with Generative AI tools, which makes it difficult for companies to access and use these technologies. Interestingly, just under half of the organizations surveyed only provide access to vetted and approved Generative AI tools to a small portion of their workforce, less than 20 percent, indicating a cautious approach in the early stages of technology integration.
Confidence is only growing slowly
Trust is another central pillar for the successful implementation of Generative AI. The study reveals that while trust in the technology is generally increasing, the lack of trust remains a barrier to widespread adoption. Organizations are investing heavily in safeguards and promoting transparency to increase trust in the technology. Risk mitigation measures also play a role here. As a result, around 60 percent of organizations are able to effectively combine the rapid adoption of Generative AI with risk management. The study also highlights that trust in AI technologies has increased significantly since the introduction of Generative AI in 2022. However, only 36% of companies actively measure the trust and engagement of their employees.
Extensive further training and retraining measures
According to the Deloitte study, almost three quarters of the companies surveyed plan to revise their strategies for recruiting and training young talent in the next two years due to generative AI. These adjustments include not only the introduction of new work processes, but also extensive further training and retraining measures for the existing workforce. The reason for this is the need to strengthen both technical and social skills in order to fully exploit the possibilities of AI and to take ethical and trust-building aspects into account.
In summary, the report shows that Generative AI has the potential to bring about profound changes in the business world. Companies that use and integrate this technology effectively can not only increase their efficiency, but also achieve strategic advantages in the form of innovation and growth. However, the challenges of scaling and the need to build trust and develop the workforce accordingly remain significant challenges to overcome.
