The 10 most important soft skills for managers

In management, you have a special responsibility. Not only do you have to lead teams, you also have to be able to keep an eye on the big picture. To be successful as a manager, these 10 top soft skills will help you:

 

  1. Strong communication skills: If you want to lead and manage, you need to be able to communicate. This applies both in direct contact with other managers and management as well as in discussions with employees. After all, others should be able to understand and comprehend your plans for the company.
  2. Persuasiveness: As a manager, you are often faced with difficult decisions and problems that you can only solve together as a team. It is therefore all the more important to be able to convince others and inspire their motivation.
  3. Ability to work in a team: Even if you have a leading position in the company, you are always dependent on others. You cannot move your department or the company forward and solve tasks on your own. 
  4. Solution orientation and willingness to compromise: It doesn't help if you as a manager always insist on your point of view. Those who can be convinced by better arguments have a clear advantage in management.
  5. Independence: You certainly need the advice of your employees in management. But at the end of the day, it's about being able to make your own decisions, knowing what you want to do and where you want to go.
  6. Analytical skills: An important soft skill for managers is being able to distinguish the important from the unimportant. This makes your actions efficient and also benefits your company.
  7. Assertiveness: Sometimes it takes a bit of robustness to assert yourself against others. As a manager in particular, you are also expected to make decisions and sometimes swim against the tide. Thanks to your analytical skills as a leader and manager, you have an overview in certain situations where some have long since lost it.
  8. Entrepreneurial thinking: In management, you represent the interests of the company, not your own. This fact should also determine your actions. The focus is on the business.
  9. Flexibility: In management, many things do not work out as originally planned. Good managers therefore always have a plan B at hand so that they can react flexibly to changing conditions. Flexibility is also an advantage when it comes to thinking, for example when it comes to being able to accept other arguments.
  10. Empathy: As a manager, you should know the needs of your employees as well as the needs of management or stakeholders.
