Tips on the IDG
Inner Development Goals?

Learning and developing together

The global non-profit initiative "Inner Development Goals" (IDGs) was founded in Stockholm in 2019 with this in mind. It brings together people from all over the world, including from the knowledge and business sectors.

The vision: to equip people worldwide with skills and qualities to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Development on a scientific basis - for more sustainability

The Inner Development Guide

In a scientific survey of 1000+ participants worldwide, the IDG took stock of the situation. The result: an extensive amount of data on relevant skills and qualities for personal growth in order to achieve the UN's SDGs.

The IDG Framework was created from this data. It currently comprises 5 dimensions with a total of 25 subordinate skills - and is being continuously developed.

1. being - developing my inner attitude and awareness

Becoming more aware of what is going on inside us and how this relates to and interacts with our environment. This awareness promotes greater presence, more clarity about our goals and the ability to react with consideration even in complex situations.

The competencies in this dimension include:

Inner compass: a deep commitment to life. My values and goals also serve the common good and the greater good.

Integrity and authenticity: acting sincerely, honestly and in line with my deeply rooted values.

Openness and willingness to learn: the curiosity and flexible willingness to exchange perspectives, allow vulnerability, embrace change and grow.

Self-awareness: reflecting on one's own thoughts, feelings, desires and actions and self-image. The ability to self-regulate.

Presence: the ability and openness to be in the here and now, to accept reality as it unfolds and to respond to it in a meaningful way.

2. thinking - understanding our complex world

Greater clarity, openness to different perspectives and a view of the long-term consequences of our current actions for the future: qualities that help us to deal with complex situations and make sustainable decisions in our interconnected world.

Competencies in this dimension include:

Critical thinking: Critically reflecting on views, evidence and plans.

Perspective skills: active and meaningful use of knowledge from different perspectives. Learning from them.

Systems thinking: understanding complexities and working with the interrelationships and properties of systems.

Long-term orientation and visions: Develop and focus on long-term goals to promote societal common good and ecological well-being.

Creativity: thinking outside conventional patterns, recognizing new possibilities and transforming them into ideas that can be implemented.

3. relationship - caring for others and the world

Appreciation, compassion and connection with people, future generations and the living planet. These attitudes help us to create a fairer, more inclusive and more sustainable world for all.

Competencies in this dimension include:

Appreciation:
approaching people and the world with a basic attitude of appreciation, gratitude and joy.

Connectedness: the awareness of being connected to or part of a larger whole, e.g. a community, humanity or a global ecosystem.

Modesty: acting in a way that addresses the needs of the situation and not your own importance and role.

Empathy and compassion: treating others, yourself and nature with kindness, empathy and compassion and reducing existing suffering.

Forgiveness: the willingness to overcome hostility, process trauma and create space for healing.

4. cooperation - building trust and working together

Building trusting relationships, recognizing different values, skills and perspectives and creating safe spaces: this is how we enable all of us to work towards common goals and shared impact.

The competencies in this dimension include:

Communication skills:
truly listening to others, encouraging genuine dialog, skillfully expressing one's opinion, resolving conflicts constructively and adapting communication to different groups.

Co-creation skills: Facilitate collaborative processes with diverse stakeholders, promote teamwork and psychological safety and awareness of power dynamics.

Inclusive mindset and intercultural competence: embracing diversity and including people and communities with different perspectives and backgrounds.

Relationship building: Enriching relationships with emotional intelligence, trust, respect, mutual understanding and a willingness to collaborate.

Mobilization skills: inspiring and empowering others to work towards common goals.

5. acting - leading and driving change

Moving forward with courage and optimism. Developing the ability to act together and acting with purpose and perseverance: this is how visions become significant changes - especially in uncertain times.

Competencies in this dimension include:

Courage:
standing up for values, making decisions decisively and taking action. If necessary, question and break up existing structures and perspectives.

Hope and optimism: building and maintaining faith in our ability to create a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable future.

Conscious use of resources: acting with a view to the limited natural resources of our planet. Prioritize conservation, regeneration and thriftiness to prevent harmful consumption.

Proactivity: future-oriented, responsible action in relation to urgent challenges. This action is based on solidarity and care for human dignity and the world.

Resilience: overcoming adversity with skill, remaining committed and persevering, even when progress is slow or uncertain.

The work of the IDG

Co-Creation & Best Practice

In co-creation and a wide variety of events and formats, experts show and explain how we are developing the necessary skills to achieve the United Nations' SDGs. Together with universities, scientists and companies worldwide, the IDG Framework is continuously updated. An important focus here: offering development opportunities for everyone and open source.

Companies such as IKEA, Stena Line, Novartis, Google and Icebug integrate the IDG into their day-to-day business. They provide best practice and report on their practical experiences. This look over the shoulder at the use of the IDG framework in (leadership) development also provides impetus for the ongoing development of our Haufe Be6! Leadership Framework. And surely for you too?
