Serdar Sahin, Head of BP Accounting at Business Power GmbH,
, on his impressions and experiences from the
training “AI in Leadership”

From AI Skeptic to Practical User

As Head of BP Accounting at Business Power GmbH, Serdar Sahin is responsible for financial accounting and manages a team of 18 employees. Prior to this, he spent 15 years managing international plant construction projects as a commercial project manager. Effective communication has always been important to him. For a long time, he deliberately avoided using AI tools. Together with a colleague and his manager, he then attended the “AI in Leadership” training offered by the Haufe Akademie. In this interview, he explains how AI now supports him in his daily routines and how the training has changed his attitude toward AI.

"I went into the ' training ' with absolutely no prior knowledge. I had never even used AI in my personal life."

Serdar, what motivated you to participate in the “AI in Leadership” training ?

It was actually a combination of two things. Our management had launched a program for AI power users and, as part of that, encouraged executives to further their education in the field. But things really got rolling during the weekly meeting with my boss and a colleague. The two of them were already using AI, whereas I hardly ever did. Professionally, I’d tried AI once with our open-item list. But it went back and forth so many times that I ended up doing it myself in the end. Personally, I’d never used AI. I was just old-school—I did my research the traditional way, using Google. For a long time, I didn’t see the need for it. My communication skills have always been one of my strengths, both verbally and in writing. AI-generated texts, on the other hand, struck me as emotionless. But with 18 employees reporting to me, I realized: I can handle some tasks more efficiently with AI. And my supervisor and my colleague wanted to deepen their understanding of the basics. So we looked for a suitable training and found what we were looking for at Haufe Akademie .

At the " training ," you noticed that many participants have long since been using AI as a matter of course. How did that make you feel?

To be honest, that really shook me up. I saw how naturally the others were already working with it. Suddenly, I felt like I’d been transported back 20 years. Back then, as a young professional, I used to look down on older colleagues who weren’t open to new things.
Still, I never felt left behind in the “ training .” From the very beginning, the trainer made sure that absolutely everyone kept up. She kept coming over to us, offering support and checking in to see if everything was clear or if anyone was underchallenged. For those who caught on faster, there were also more difficult additional tasks. Everyone was truly challenged at their own level.

"AI holds up a mirror to me. But I'm the one who makes the decisions."

Was there a "lightbulb moment" when you thought, "Wow, you can do that with AI?"

Yes, definitely. On the second day, we had to simulate a data breach. We only had ten minutes to create several pieces of content, including communications to the workforce, shareholders, and the works council, and even an emergency plan for management. We worked in groups to try out various AI tools for this. What can I say—I was really blown away by how professional the results were. In no time at all, we had a structured emergency plan, and the generated texts were almost ready to print. Sure, we could have polished them up here and there, but for just ten minutes? That’s amazing! I really didn’t expect such a complex task to go so much faster with AI.

What has changed in your day-to-day work since the “ training ”?

I use AI much more often now than I used to. For example, I have it summarize long email threads—it just saves time. And I have it show me what’s coming up next week, what I need to prepare, and where I’m still waiting for feedback. And when things get tricky—especially with HR issues—I like to get a second perspective. AI doesn’t provide the one perfect solution, but it helps me look at things from a different angle. In the end, of course, I still make the decision myself. To be honest, I don’t use AI as often as I probably should. But practice makes perfect. That’s why I’ve started trying it out in my personal life as well—for example, when planning trips.

"I'm a good example to my team that you can still get started even late in the game."

How can your team tell that you participated in the " training "?

I’m thinking especially of our new process descriptions. Before, we hardly had anything in writing. There was no documentation anywhere on how we handle certain procedures, and that kept coming up time and again in our day-to-day work. After the “ training ,” I used AI to document a few key processes—for example, how we handle outstanding invoices or when we send out a reminder. It only took about ten minutes, and honestly: If I’d done it by hand, it would’ve easily taken me half a day. I also tell the team openly that the drafts were created with AI, so that more people will feel comfortable trying it.
Most of the team now works with AI themselves, but there are still a few who aren’t quite ready to give it a try. It helps when I openly share that I was pretty skeptical myself at first. That breaks down some of the barriers a bit.

Who would you recommend the " training " to?

Especially for executives who, like me, have been somewhat skeptical of AI up until now. If you lead a larger team, AI can help you tackle tasks much more efficiently. You don’t need any prior knowledge. I was a total beginner myself, while many others were already quite knowledgeable. The trainer still managed to bring everyone up to speed. And I’m convinced that it’s easier to get your team on board with AI if you engage more deeply with the topic yourself.

“Theadvanced participantsweren’t bored, and beginners like me weren’t left behind. The seminar leaders handled our diverse group with great tact.”
