AI in marketing

AI is everywhere—and yet many people don’t understand where it really helps. AI in marketing is often used incorrectly: too superficially, too expensively, or without a proper understanding of how it works. The result is disappointing—not because of the technology, but because of a lack of strategy.

AI in marketing has real potential—for repetitive tasks, data analysis, and scalable personalization. When it comes to strategy development, true creativity, and authenticity, human judgment remains crucial.

Specifically, the question is: Where does AI really help? How do you avoid common pitfalls? And how do you ensure compliance with the EU AI Act and data protection regulations?

What AI Can Really Do in Marketing

Speed up content creation: AI can generate drafts—quickly and consistently. But without proper editing, AI-generated text comes across as generic. The best approach: use AI for the framework, and humans for substance and authenticity.

Take your data analysis to the next level: Predictive analytics identifies high-quality leads. Machine learning uncovers patterns in customer data that humans overlook. That’s a real advantage.

Scaling personalization: AI can personalize every customer touchpoint—emails, websites, and content. Previously, this was only possible with large budgets. Now it’s available for smaller businesses, too.

Automating Routine Tasks: Lead scoring, email segmentation, reporting—AI handles these tasks better and faster than manual methods.

What AI isn't good at:

  • Strategy development (requires human judgment)
  • Authentic voice (AI sounds like AI)
  • Bold, creative ideas (AI tends toward the middle)
  • Genuine customer relationships (this is too mechanical)

Specific use cases that work

Search the case study database: AI can analyze and extract information from thousands of case studies—answering questions like “Which industries benefit most from our product?”—faster than humans.

Analyzing customer conversations: AI sentiment analysis identifies which support tickets reflect customer dissatisfaction and provides early warning signs.

Content Repurposing: A blog post is automatically turned into 5 social media posts, an email series, and a video script. It’s not perfect, but it’s fast.

Optimize lead scoring: AI identifies genuine sales-ready leads from thousands of options. This saves time and increases the closing rate.

Risks and Governance

The EU AI Act is coming. This means that the use of AI must be documented, biases must be assessed, and data protection must be in order. Companies that use AI blindly today will face fines later on.

Effective AI management in marketing means:

  • Understanding what data AI uses
  • Check for bias (does the AI generate equally good outputs for all target groups?)
  • Compliance checks (GDPR, labeling, data security)
  • Real control (people can override decisions; they don't have to trust blindly)

FAQ

1. Can AI replace marketers? No. AI will take over routine tasks (reporting, simple content). But strategy, creativity, and customer engagement require human input. Marketers who understand AI will become more important, not less.

2. Isn’t it illegal to use ChatGPT in a business context? It’s not illegal, but it’s risky without clear guidelines: What data are you giving ChatGPT? What about data protection? Copyright? Compliance with the EU AI Act? It’s legal, but clear policies are needed.

3. Which AI tools should I be familiar with as a marketer? At a minimum: ChatGPT (or an alternative), a content analysis tool (e.g., using NLP), a personalization tool, and a sentiment analysis tool. Not all at once—but depending on the use case.

4. How do I maintain my brand’s quality when using AI for content? Rigorous editing. AI provides the input; real people check whether it aligns with the brand. Also: clarity in bylines (is this AI-generated or not?). Be transparent.

5. Does OpenAI use my business knowledge for training when I use ChatGPT? That depends on your version of OpenAI. With ChatGPT Plus (paid), inputs aren’t used for training. With the free version, they might be. Be careful with sensitive data.
