Windows 10 support extended by 3 years - for a fee

Contents
Windows 10 support will soon be discontinued. Microsoft announced this months ago. From October 14, 2025, there will no longer be any updates for Microsoft's operating system. This announcement was not met with understanding everywhere. Now Microsoft options to extend Windows 10 support by up to three years.
What does the end of Windows 10 support mean?
Put simply, the end of Windows 10 support means that Microsoft will no longer offer updates from October 2025. This means that bugs, security gaps and technical defects will remain. This opens up opportunities for cybercrime and, of course, customers will no longer be helped if there is a problem with the program.
The latest version of Windows 10 is version 22H2 and has been available for some time. There will not be another version. However, Microsoft will continue to provide the current version with regular updates until October 2025.
It's clear why Microsoft is discontinuing Windows 10 support: the tech giant wants us to switch to the latest operating systems. This is not exclusively self-serving, as more modern versions generally offer more security - regardless of the updates.
Nevertheless, there was a lot of headwind when Microsoft announced the end of Windows 10 support. That's why the company is now rowing back a little and presenting ways in which users can continue to use Windows 10 safely beyond October 14, 2025.
Windows 10 support extension against payment
Windows 7 already offered to extend support for the operating system. However, this is not possible indefinitely. For Windows 10, customers will be able to extend the security updates for up to three years.
The extension is annual and includes a monthly update to close security gaps and minimize risks. There will be no further support beyond this. New features, non-security updates or technical support are no longer planned.
In contrast to previous Windows versions, private users can now also extend support for Windows 10 for the first time. Previously, the offer was limited to companies.
Microsoft has not yet revealed what the price for the extended security updates will be. It therefore remains to be seen whether Microsoft will offer different pricing models for companies and private individuals. The extended support for Windows 7 rose to a whopping 344 euros in the third year. Private users in particular are better off switching to another system for this price. By way of comparison, the Home version of Windows 11 currently costs around 145 euros.
